INTERVIEW - DANIEL KOWALSKI

07-12-01 | 4:07pm

PRESS CONFERENCE WITH DANIEL KOWALSKI, on his comeback swim in the heats of the 400m freestyle on the first day of the Telstra World Cup in Melbourne. Kowalski qualifiede second fastest behind Craig Stevens.

How was that, you looked like you were giving it to Craig Stevens at the end?

Kowalski: I decided that if I was in the position to win the heat, I would try. 100% effort and I was more than happy with that result.

How is the shoulder?

Kowalski: I didn?t think about it, didn?t notice it. I wasn?t even concerned, I was more worried about the lactic acid.

What did it feel like?

Kowalski: I couldn?t eat breakfast. I am rooming with two kids from home and we mucked around a bit and I felt relaxed, but since I got to the pool, and people started saying ?good luck?, it seems like a bigger deal than it really is, and sitting in the marshalling area I was pretty damned nervous.

When was your last swim?

Kowalksi : The Australian Short Course Championships here 15 months ago.

When was the last time you swam without your shoulder affecting your stroke?

Kowalski: Before I knew what was going on with it, and just feeling the pain, it was 1994 in my right one. I had problems with the lead up to Commonwealth Games in Victoria so I guess it was around then.

Are you swimming the final?

Kowalski: Yes I am. Usually Friday is a hard training day, so we are trying to keep routine as much as possible. But, I?m not expecting to swim any quicker tonight. I pulled up okay so Denis (Cotterell? coach) said why not.

Did you want to throw in a good one at Craig Stevens?

Kowalski: I was feeling comfortable until he picked up at the 200 metre mark and I thought I?m not going to let him go. In the last 100 I gave it all I had. My turns were terrible.

Is it good to have first one out of the way?

Kowalski: Yes, I feel a lot more relaxed now. I am not sore, it?s quite surreal actually. Last night, I spent a lot of time thinking about what I had been through the last year.

What is it like sitting in the waiting room?

Kowalski: I sat by myself. I used to sit with Kieren.

There were some people who doubted that I would be able to get back and that was a motivation for me. I used it as a source of motivation and it?s quite satisfying.
