articles AIS WISHES KOWALSKI WELL ON GOLD COAST Australian Institute of Sport Director John Boultbee today wished international swimming champion Daniel Kowalski well following his decision not to return to the AIS but to remain on the Gold Coast and train. Kowalski, whose family settled in Australia on the Gold Coast with his parents still there, informed AIS officials after the recent World Short-Course Championships of his decision. He will train under Grant Hackett’s coach, Dennis Cotterell. Mr Boultbee said Kowalski had come to the AIS in mid-1997 from Melbourne after his coach Bill Nelson moved back to NSW . He was also suffering from a debilitating shoulder injury and his swimming future was looking grim. Now that he was returning to his peak form, Mr Boutlbee said the AIS wished him well and he was welcome back there to use the facilities and training. Mr Boultbee stressed that Kowalski’s decision had nothing to do with his training at the AIS. "It was more a lifestyle thing for Daniel – to return to his family is important to him at this time," he said. "Daniel will remain a favourite son of the AIS. His coach Mark Regan and he are on the best of terms and Mark hopes he continues to show the form and improvement of the past 12 months. While not on an AIS scholarship, Daniel will still receive Direct Athlete
Support payments and sports medical and science services through the AIS
and can continue access AIS facilities and other support
