13 December 2001

The Fina World Cup Melbourne meet was held last weekend (Dec 7-9) where Daniel made a return to competitive swimming after 15 months. It was his first meet since having surgery on both shoulders. In the 400m freestyle, Daniel qualified 2nd fastest behind fellow Australian Craig Stevens. In the finals, daniel placed 5th with a time of 3:49.88, faster than his heat time of 3:50.05.

On the final night of competition, Daniel received a warm reception from the crowd for the 1500m freestyle. Throughout the race, the lead alternated between Daniel and Craig Stevens, but at about the meter mark, Daniel pulled away to a half a pool length lead, lapping some swimmers in the field. It was clear that Daniel would win the race, although Stevens made a final attack on Kowalski in the final 25 meters. Daniel's time was 15:03.33
